![]() The way you progress is intertwined with the comprehension the player has, which means that the pacing of the game is determined fully by yourself. In the former, without giving away any details, I felt that the structure of the game naturally aligned well with the experience of the player exploring an unknown world. The closest example I can think of was Outer Wilds (can’t be a r/patientgamers post without mentioning it), and The Climb (a VR game). It still feels like I am playing levels, solving a puzzle or going through the beats of a narrative with clear setups and payoffs. I never actually feel like I am a defense attorney when playing Ace Attorney, climbing a mountain in Celeste, nor exploring my own hometown while back from college in Night of The Woods. When I started pondering this question it also struck me that I don’t know if I have ever felt immersed when playing a video game. Is this just hyperbole, and if so what is actually immersion? To me it feels like I’m playing Batman, a character with his gadgets and looks, but I am never actually him. Same situation with the “makes you feel like Batman” meme about the Arkham games. Online I see people talking about feeling like they lived in these epic worlds for weeks/months when they were playing them, which seems very foreign to me. I could never get into any Elder Scrolls games, which I have often heard being described as hugely immersive experiences. Immersion might feel like a very intuitive word to use because we believe that it grasps that feeling we are trying to describe, but I have never really grasped what people actually mean when they say it, and usually just treat it as another buzzword in game reviews. I believe that the term has been misused and muddied out in a similar vein to how the word cinematography is mixed up with aesthetics when discussing movies. Personally, I usually find the use of the word immersion when talking about video games to mean absolutely nothing.
